Outpatient sites can include: adult and child populations, individual, family and couples psychotherapy; case consultation and presentations; and testing and assessment. Outpatient sites may be tailored to include work with ethnic-specific populations. Outpatient placements are determined primarily by accreditation requirements, the interests of the Intern and by availability of a site.

The SPARK (Supported Parents and Resilient Kids) Center is a model program offering comprehensive, integrated, state-of-the-art services for children and families whose lives are affected by medical, emotional and/or behavioral challenges. The program serves Boston's highest-risk children: those living with complicated medical conditions (including HIV/AIDS, failure-to-thrive, and neurodevelopmental challenges); as well as children who are involved with the Department of Social Services due to significant family and social concerns (including child abuse and neglect, domestic violence, adult substance abuse). The SPARK Center is located in the Mattapan area of Boston. This placement site is affiliated with Boston Medical Center and with community health centers that include mental health in the broad spectrum of health care services they provide for residents of the neighborhoods in which they are located. The Spark Center provides cutting edge training on the intersection of primary health care and mental health services. Under supervision of a licensed psychologist, the psychology Intern will provide basic mental health services such as diagnostic evaluations, psychological testing, crisis intervention, and individual (child and adult), group, and family therapy.

BMC Primary Care. Intern will participate in a range of activities related to Behavioral Medicine/ Health Psychology practice within different departments at Boston Medical Center:

General Internal Medicine

  • Co-lead Behavioral Management of Hypertension classes
  • Diagnosis and either triage or brief treatment of anxiety and depression
  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing
  • Stress reduction and relaxation training with stress related medical presentations.

Psychiatry

  • Co-lead 8 week smoking cessation classes for both patients and employees
  • Consult to inpatient med service on smoking cessation counseling for interns and residents.

Neurology

  • Behavioral counseling for insomnia (Sleep Disorders Clinic)
  • Co-lead Behavioral Management of Chronic Pain classes
  • Psychological evaluations on patients scheduled for Sub Thalamic Nucleus Deep Brain Implant surgery
  • Psychological evaluations prior to long acting opioid treatment for pain
  • Hypnosis for conversion disorders
  • Psychological evaluations prior to dorsal column implant surgery for pain
  • Relaxation training with Parkinson's patients

Bariatric Surgery

  • Psychological evaluation and Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory administration and interpretation to patients scheduled for gastric bypass surgery.

The intern will work closely with Dr. Sokolove, the primary Psychologist in primary care. Intern is expected to complete readings in both the empirical literature in specific Behavioral Medicine topics and current books that give Health Psychology overviews. The intern may participate in ongoing research if she/he wishes. The intern will attend case conferences and presentations.

Children's Services of Roxbury (CSR) is the largest minority-administered agency in Greater Boston, with deep roots in the neighborhoods of Boston and an increasing capacity to serve communities statewide. For more than 30 years, CSR has provided a broad spectrum of high quality services and programs to economically disadvantaged infants, children, adolescents and their families, as well as homeless adults. CSR operates more than 22 social service programs serving thousands of low-income children, families, and adults throughout Massachusetts annually. The CMTP Intern provides clinical and support services to children and families, as well as intensive care coordination and treatment planning for these individuals under the Massachusetts Children's Behavioral Health Initiative.

South Cove Mental Health Center (The Asian Mental Health Program) is located in Boston's Chinatown with a large Cantonese/Chinese and Vietnamese-speaking client population. Interns will provide services and receive training in culturally competent diagnosis evaluation, individual, group and family therapy.

Martha Eliot Community Health Center, affiliated with Boston's Children's Hospital. Martha Eliot has a large Spanish-speaking population and also serves individuals from African American, Anglo and Asian backgrounds. Interns will provide services and receive training in culturally competent diagnosis, evaluation, individual, group and family therapy.

Outpatient Child/ Adult Behavioral Health Clinics at Boston Medical Center interns will provide psychological services and receive training in cross-cultural diagnosis, evaluations, individual, group and family therapy. Placement may includes coverage and training in the Pediatric Emergency Room serving a diverse inner-city client population.
